It is that time of the year when Punjabi folk light bonfires to celebrate the festival of the harvest festival of Lohri. This year, some farmers and activists on the Delhi border “celebrated” it differently: by burning copies of the new, controversial agricultural laws. Farmers have been on protest for nearly a month and a half and yesterday, they did not accept a Supreme Court intervention. The Supreme Court of India stayed the implementation of the Centre’s farm laws passed in Parliament in September, and appointed a four-member committee to listen to both parties and make recommendations. The farmer groups have criticized the committee stating that all members are apparently in favor of the farm laws.

As we have been reporting, thousands of Indian farmers have been protesting to no avail.
