Laxmi Narasimhan, Starbucks Global CEO, announces the vision of launching 1 outlet every 3 days in India

Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan, in his maiden visit to India since assuming the corner office In Seattle, expressed profound sentiments about the significance of his homeland to both himself and the global coffee giant.

On September 1, 2022, Starbucks announced that Narasimhan would become the company’s next CEO. He succeeded Howard Schultz, who had been interim CEO since Kevin Johnson resigned in March 2022. Prior to Narasimhan taking over as CEO, he trained as a barista for six months to learn what changes needed to be made.

As he visited India this week, Laxman Narasimhan, chief executive officer, Starbucks said, “Over the past 11 years, the India market has grown to become one of Starbucks fastest-growing markets in the world. With a growing middle class, we are proud to help cultivate the evolving coffee culture while honoring its rich heritage. With our trusted business partner, Tata, and our green apron partners, we are well-positioned to capture the limitless opportunities as we open one store every three days in India and further our aspiration to become truly global.”

Starbucks, in collaboration with Tata Consumer Products Limited through a longstanding 50:50 joint venture, is expanded its reach significantly. With over 390 stores spanning 54 cities and a workforce of approximately 4,300 partners adorning the iconic green aprons, the company takes pride in fostering an immersive coffee experience while respecting India’s rich heritage.

Following the success of Starbucks Reserve Fort Mumbai, which opened in 2022, Tata Starbucks will open the second Starbucks Reserve® store this year as part of the long-term commitment to elevate the coffee experience in India. Catering to the growing number of coffee enthusiasts with a penchant for premium coffee experiences, the new Starbucks Reserve store will create unique moments of connection with customers through the artistry and craft of Starbucks® black apron Coffee Masters.

In line with the mission to elevate high-quality Indian arabica coffee, Starbucks Reserve whole bean coffee ‘Monsooned’ Malabar from India will be available both at Starbucks Reserve Stores in India and the US later this year.

Narasimhan announced that there is a goal for a staggering 1,000 stores by 2028, envisioning a new store unveiling every 3 days. This expansion drive extends beyond conventional stores to include drive-thrus and airport locations, alongside a commitment to double the partner base. To achieve its target of 1,000 stores by 2028 the company will double its workforce to approximately 8,600 partners as it plans to enter Tier 2 and 3 Indian cities, expand drive-thrus, airports and its 24-hour store footprint to serve customers where they are.

Starbucks entered the Indian market in October 2012 through a 50/50 Joint Venture with Tata Consumer Products Limited and currently operates more than 390 stores in India across 54 cities, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Vapi, Lucknow, Amritsar, Kochi, Ludhiana, Bhopal, Indore, Kanpur, Jaipur, Siliguri, Thiruvananthapuram, Nashik, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Goa, Nagpur, Jalandhar, Anand, Patiala, Raipur, Kolhapur, Bhatinda, Dehradun, Udaipur, Vijayawada, Lonavala, Mysore, Agra, Aurangabad, Calicut, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Guwahati, Meerut, Nagpur, and Vishakhapatnam through a network of over 4,200 passionate partners (employees). Starbucks stores are operated by the joint venture, Tata Starbucks Private Limited, and branded as Starbucks Coffee – A TATA Alliance.
