US to join global coronavirus vaccine program, says Fauci

Biden’s top medical adviser on the pandemic Dr Anthony S Fauci told the World Health Organization’s executive board that Biden will issue a directive on Thursday that states the United State’s intent to join the COVAX Facility. 

Dr Anthony S Fauci said that US President Joe Biden on Thursday will order the United States to support projects to deploy Covid-19 vaccines, diagnostic and therapeutics to people in need across the world. Fauci who is Biden’s top medical adviser on the pandemic told the World Health Organization’s (WHO) executive board that Biden will issue a directive on Thursday that states the United State’s intent to join the COVAX Facility, a project to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to people in need across the world irrespective of rich or poor countries. 

Fauci said that the United States will stop reducing the number of US staff at WHO and will pay its financial obligation.

He further added that the country would support the “ACT Accelerator.” ACT Accelerator is an umbrella initiative including COVAX that also aims on distributing diagnostic tools and therapeutics for Covid-19 to countries around the globe.

Fauci was speaking at his first WHO meeting as the head of the US delegation. As we have reported earlier, Biden on Wednesday decided to reinstate ties with WHO with Dr Anthony S Fauci as the head of the US delegation. Last year, the Trump administration had decided to withdraw the country’s membership and funding from the organization. 

Biden tweeted: “ America is back at the table.”
