Gujarati has officially become the third most-spoken Indian language in Canada, following Punjabi and Hindi. According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, approximately 87,900 individuals in the country speak Gujarati, reflecting a vibrant and growing community. Between 2016 and 2021, Canada welcomed around 22,935 newcomers from Gujarat, contributing to a substantial 26% increase in the number of Gujarati speakers.

The influx of Gujarati immigrants into Canada can be traced back to the early 1980s, with significant growth observed after 2011. Many Gujaratis have chosen Canada as their new home due to its welcoming immigration policies and the promise of a better quality of life. Many Gujaratis have established successful businesses across various sectors, including retail, hospitality, and technology.

Despite the positive growth trends, recent policy changes have raised concerns within the community. There has been a staggering 80% drop in visa applications from Gujarat, primarily attributed to rising housing costs and job market saturation in major Canadian cities.

The growing presence of Gujarati speakers has also led to a flourishing cultural landscape in Canada. Festivals such as Navratri, Diwali, and Uttarayan are celebrated with great enthusiasm, drawing participation from both the Gujarati community and other cultural groups.

Community organizations play a pivotal role in supporting newcomers by offering resources such as language classes, job placement services, and networking opportunities. Looking ahead, the future of the Gujarati community in Canada appears promising despite current challenges. The presence of a Gujarati-speaking large diaspora could encourage more individuals to consider Canada as a viable option for relocation.
