Indian batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi etched his name into the record books on Saturday by becoming the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket, making his debut at just 15 years and 99 days in the second T20 International against England at Old Trafford. However, the landmark occasion ended in disappointment as England secured a four-wicket victory to lead the five-match series 1-0.
Opening the innings, the left-handed batter displayed the fearless stroke play that has made him one of India’s brightest young prospects. He scored 14 runs from 10 balls, including two towering sixes, before being stumped while attempting another attacking shot. His debut surpassed the long-standing record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days in 1989.
India posted a competitive 190 for 7 after valuable contributions from Ishan Kishan (49), Shreyas Iyer (37) and Tilak Varma. England’s chase began poorly, losing both openers in the first over, but a superb unbeaten 76 off 46 balls from Jacob Bethell turned the match decisively in the hosts’ favour.
The teenager’s elevation to the national side follows a remarkable rise through age-group cricket and a breakout domestic season. His explosive performances for India Under-19 and impressive displays in franchise cricket convinced selectors to fast-track him into the senior squad, underlining India’s growing willingness to invest in exceptional young talent.
