Elon Musk’s warning that artificial intelligence could soon run into an energy constraint has raised a critical question for India: can the country expand its AI infrastructure rapidly without putting additional pressure on its power systems?
Musk recently highlighted the importance of improving “intelligence per joule” — essentially, the amount of computing capability that can be delivered for every unit of electricity consumed. His comments come as AI models, data centres and advanced computing systems demand increasingly large amounts of power.
For India, the issue is particularly significant as the country seeks to establish itself as a major AI hub. The expansion of AI services will require not only semiconductor capacity and computing infrastructure but also reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to operate large data centres.
The challenge is likely to become more pronounced as demand for AI computing grows. Conventional data centres already require substantial electricity for computing and cooling, while increasingly powerful AI systems can intensify those requirements.
Experts cited in recent discussions around India’s AI ambitions have argued that sustainability cannot be treated as an afterthought.
Musk’s argument therefore shifts part of the AI debate from computing power to computing efficiency. Better chips, improved algorithms and more efficient data centres could allow AI systems to deliver greater output without a proportional increase in energy consumption.
India’s AI opportunity will consequently depend on more than attracting investments and building computing capacity. As the country expands its digital infrastructure, ensuring that AI growth is supported by efficient and sustainable energy systems could become equally important.
The emerging debate suggests that India’s AI race may ultimately be decided not simply by how much computing power it can build, but by how efficiently it can power it.
