Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela, reaffirming India’s readiness to provide all possible assistance to the disaster-hit nation.
In a message posted on social media, Modi conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of India to the Venezuelan government and its citizens, particularly the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured and assured solidarity with all those affected. “India stands ready to extend all possible assistance,” the Prime Minister said.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck within moments of each other on June 24, causing extensive damage across several parts of Venezuela, including the capital, Caracas. Authorities reported significant destruction to buildings and infrastructure, while emergency teams continued search-and-rescue operations amid fears that the casualty toll could rise further.
The Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency as rescue personnel worked through damaged neighbourhoods and debris-strewn streets. International humanitarian support has begun mobilising, with several countries offering aid and technical assistance to support recovery efforts.
India’s offer of assistance reflects its longstanding commitment to humanitarian cooperation and disaster relief. The gesture was welcomed by Venezuelan authorities, who expressed gratitude for the message of solidarity and support during a period of national mourning.
As Venezuela grapples with one of its most severe natural disasters in recent history, global expressions of support continue to pour in, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in responding to humanitarian crises.
