India captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed disappointment over her team’s fielding lapses after a six-wicket defeat against South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, admitting that missed opportunities in the field played a major role in the setback. The defeat has put India’s hopes of reaching the semifinals under serious pressure.
Defending a target of 159 runs, India failed to capitalise on crucial moments as dropped catches allowed South African batters to recover and take control of the chase. Harmanpreet pointed out that the bowlers created opportunities, but the fielding unit could not provide the required support.
South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp made India pay heavily for those errors, remaining unbeaten on 81 runs off 45 balls to guide her side to victory. Kapp received lifelines during her innings and played a match-winning knock that turned the contest in South Africa’s favour.
India had posted 158/7 after being asked to bat, but the total proved insufficient as South Africa chased down the target with four wickets in hand. The loss marked a major setback for the Harmanpreet-led side, which had entered the tournament with strong expectations.
Harmanpreet praised the efforts of the bowling attack but admitted that failing to hold on to chances changed the momentum of the match. She stressed the need for the team to remain positive as India still had opportunities to revive their campaign in the remaining group-stage fixtures.
The Indian skipper’s comments came after a match where small moments proved decisive. In a high-pressure T20 game, dropped catches and missed chances can quickly shift the balance, and South Africa took full advantage of India’s mistakes.
With qualification scenarios becoming complicated, India now face a must-win situation in their upcoming matches. The team management will look to address fielding concerns and rebuild confidence as the tournament enters its crucial stage.
