India’s cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav showed true leadership in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. He personally said sorry to New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell after a small clash with pacer Arshdeep Singh.
The match happened in Ahmedabad. India scored 255-5, thanks to big hits from Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. New Zealand could only make 159, losing by 96 runs. India became the first team to defend the T20 title.
Trouble started in the 11th over of New Zealand’s chase. Arshdeep bowled a yorker to Mitchell. After Mitchell defended it, Arshdeep threw the ball back towards the stumps. It hit Mitchell on the pads. Mitchell got angry as Arshdeep did not say sorry right away. He walked up to Arshdeep for a word.
Captain Suryakumar and the umpires stepped in fast. Suryakumar calmed things down. Later, he went to Mitchell himself. “If Arshdeep did it on purpose, I am sorry. Even if not, I am sorry,” he told him. This set a good example for the team.
Arshdeep got a fine of 15% match fee and one demerit point from ICC for throwing the ball in a wrong way. He said sorry in a post-match talk. “My throw swung too much and hit him. It was not on purpose,” Arshdeep explained. The players shook hands at the end.
Suryakumar later called it a “heat of the moment” thing. “These happen sometimes. I told Arshdeep this is not right. He spoke to Mitchell, and it became light,” he said in an interview.
Fans praised Suryakumar’s sportsmanship. It showed how leaders handle tension on the field. India celebrated their third T20 World Cup win with pride.
