India has had a major breakthrough in the medical field which can help out the people in remote areas as well. Indian researchers have developed a Made in India brain injury scanner, called CEREBO. CEREBO is a handheld brain injury scanner which can detect internal bleeding within minutes.

The Executive Director of Biocon Ltd., Kiran Mazumdar Shaw believes that this is a very promising breakthrough and can particularly benefit patients in rural and remote areas.

Dr. Rajeev Bahl of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that this a new technology completely made in the country with ICMR’s support. He also revealed that it is now available on the government e-marketplace.

“This is a very new technology, completely Indian, developed in an IIT incubator with ICMR’s support for validation and health technology assessment. It is now available on the government e-marketplace. Using infrared waves, the handheld device can be placed on different parts of the head to quickly detect bleeding,” Dr. Bahl said.

For scanning brain injury the methods of traditional diagnosis like the Glasgow Coma Scale are very time taking as well as require costly infrastructure and trained specialists. However, with the invention of CEREBO, the developers had tried to bridge this gap and invent a portable and non-invasive tool that can diagnose brain injury. The equipment has been developed using near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

It was reported that the newly developed device can detect intracranial bleeding and edema within a minute. CEREBO can provide radiation free, color coded and cost effective diagnosis of any brain injury. It is designed to be used in ambulances, rural clinics, trauma centres, and disaster zones. The device is also expected to improve early detection and survival outcomes providing quick results.
