The President of the United States, Donald Trump has induced heavy tariffs on India which had dampened the ties between the two countries. The US has told India to end the import of Russian oil or else they will put on extra penalties along with the 25% tariff that they introduced.
Amidst all the chaos, the National Security Adviser of India Ajit Doval has reached Russia in an attempt to strengthen the ties between the two nations. The visit of Mr. Doval had been planned in advance but it had been pushed forward due to the urgency of the current unrest caused by President Trump’s comments regarding India’s relationship with Russia. It is expected that the External Affairs Minister of India, S Jaishankar will also be visiting Moscow later in the month.
Earlier today, Trump had claimed in an interview that India has not been a good trading partner to the US. He has also threatened that he is going to increase the tariff charges in the next twenty four hours as India has persisted with its import of Russian oil.
“India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them. So we settled on 25% (tariff), but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they’re buying Russian oil. They’re fuelling the war machine. And if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” the US President stated.
Trump on plenty of occasions has accused India of making profits from imports of Russian oil even though Russia is killing people in Ukraine. He has expressed his displeasure over India allegedly fueling the “Russian war machine”.
