Donors Collective, a leading philanthropic platform in faith-based sustainability, is proud to unveil ‘Adwait’—a pioneering initiative shaped by the Vedanta philosophy of non-duality (Advaita). The word “Adwait” signifies the fundamental unity and interconnectedness of all existence, reflecting a belief that protecting the planet is inseparable from serving humanity. By rooting the initiative in this timeless value, Donors Collective underscores the need for harmony between human action and the natural world—a theme at the heart of its new program.
With nearly 350,000 religious congregations across the United States—many hosting large community events each week—faith-based institutions play a significant role in generating single-use plastic waste. It is estimated that thousands of tons of plastic plates, cups, water bottles, and cutlery from religious gatherings enter landfills annually, intensifying the nation’s pollution problem.
Adwait directly addresses this challenge by supporting temples as they transition from single-use plastics to reusable, durable items such as steel glasses and plates. In its first phase, Adwait will provide matching donations to temples that eliminate PET water bottles, plastic cups, and disposable food and beverage containers (including those with plastic linings).
“We have seen how temples can inspire not just spiritual growth, but societal transformation,” said Pankaj Sharma, Chief Donor Officer (CDO) at Donors Collective. “The principle of Adwait tells us that everything is interconnected—our daily choices matter for the entire web of life. Through this initiative, we’re inviting faith communities to lead by example, becoming beacons of sustainability and environmental responsibility.”
In addition to offering matching funds for eco-friendly alternatives, Donors Collective is expanding its support for temples through a wide array of services, including:
- Specialized Fundraising Support: Expert guidance for designing and executing campaigns that appeal to environmentally conscious donors.
- Counseling and Strategic Guidance: Personalized advice to weave sustainability into every aspect of temple operation.
- Enhanced Community Outreach: Tools and training to mobilize engagement, increase awareness, and foster grassroots environmental action.
- Long-Term Impact Planning: Assistance in conceptualizing and scaling projects that offer enduring environmental, social, and spiritual benefits.
“Faith-based organizations stand at the heart of American life and have an extraordinary capacity to ripple positive change,” Mr. Sharma added. “Adwait is an opportunity to deepen the impact of temples beyond their walls, guiding communities toward a more harmonious, sustainable future.”
As always, Donors Collective ensures all Adwait funds are directed toward faith-based organizations adhering to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and demonstrable results.
