The Indian team went in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy with an inexperienced batting line-up after two of the stalwarts of their batting lineup – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired just before the team was announced. But the Indian batting order doesn’t seem to miss the batting giants as they achieved a batting record that has evaded them for 93 years in the first match of the series against England.
India first played a test match back in 1932 before it was an independent nation. In their first match of the series against England in Headingley it was for the first time in the 93 year Test history of the country that the team recorded 5 centuries in a single match. The team scored 3 centuries in the first innings and then followed it up with 2 in the second innings.
In the first innings it was Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159), Shubman Gill (147 off 227) and Rishabh Pant (134 off 178) while in the second innings it was the other opener KL Rahul (137 off 247) alongside Pant (118 off 140) who scored twin hundreds.
Although it was the first time ever for India, it is the sixth time ever that a team has been able to achieve this feat in the history of Test cricket. India also became the second side ever to do it in an away test, a feat which was first achieved by Australia against the West Indies in Kingston in 1955.
Coming to the match, India on back of centuries by two of their most experienced batsmen in the second innings have posted a target of 371 for England to chase on the last day. Despite the valiant efforts by India, England came out winner of the Test match as they chased down 371 with five wickets to spare.
