In a significant shift for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill is set to be named the new Test captain, with Rishabh Pant poised to take over as vice-captain, as the team prepares for the upcoming five-match series against England. This leadership change follows the recent retirement of Rohit Sharma from Test cricket and signals the beginning of a new era as India embarks on its World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign.

The decision comes after star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was initially considered a frontrunner for the captaincy, opted out of contention due to workload management and fitness concerns. Bumrah’s inability to guarantee participation in all five Tests against England prompted selectors to seek a leader who could consistently feature throughout the series. As a result, the focus shifted to Gill and Pant, both seen as pivotal figures in India’s red-ball future.

At just 25, Shubman Gill has quickly risen through the ranks, impressing with his temperament and leadership in domestic and IPL cricket. His appointment is viewed as an investment in youth, with selectors believing he is the “obvious choice” to lead India into a new phase. Rishabh Pant, meanwhile, has been rewarded for his aggressive batting and proven track record in challenging overseas conditions, making him a natural deputy. Pant’s average above 42, with centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa, underscores his value as a match-winner.

The new leadership duo will be tasked with guiding a transitioning Indian side as it faces England in a high-stakes series beginning June 20 at Headingley. The selection committee reportedly considered bringing back Virat Kohli for a leadership role, but ultimately decided to back Gill and Pant for continuity and future planning.

As the cricketing world watches, all eyes will be on Gill and Pant to see if their partnership can usher in sustained success for India in the longest format. The official squad announcement is expected by May 24, setting the stage for a new chapter in Indian Test cricket
