India has secured significant agreements to supply 4.12 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen derivatives to Japan and Singapore, marking a major milestone in the country’s renewable energy ambitions, announced Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi earlier this week.

The export deals represent a crucial step toward India’s goal of establishing itself as a global leader in green hydrogen production, with targets set for 5 million metric tonnes by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in January 2023.

Alongside the export agreements, the minister unveiled the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI), designed to verify that hydrogen is produced exclusively using renewable energy sources. The certification framework aims to establish transparency, traceability, and market credibility for India’s green hydrogen production.

The certification process will be conducted by Accredited Carbon Verification Agencies listed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. All green hydrogen producers, except those producing solely for export, must undergo this certification process.

Once India launches its carbon market in 2026, these certificates will become tradable assets. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, underscores India’s commitment to clean energy transition and reducing carbon emissions.

Joshi also revealed that discussions are underway with state governments to sign Power Purchase Agreements for renewable energy, while his ministry collaborates with the Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission to address pending regulatory issues.

These developments position India to capitalize on the growing global demand for clean energy alternatives while contributing significantly to international climate goals.
