Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has expressed strong confidence that India will secure the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), despite competition from countries like Canada and Nigeria. Speaking to the media, Mandaviya acknowledged the interest shown by other nations but emphasized India’s readiness and commitment to hosting the centenary edition of the Games.

India’s bid, centered on Ahmedabad, is part of a broader strategy to position the country as a global hub for major sporting events. The 2030 CWG is seen as a crucial stepping stone toward India’s larger ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. The Gujarat government is actively developing world-class sports infrastructure, including the renovation of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and construction of new stadiums and sports complexes, to support these plans.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has faced challenges in securing hosts for recent editions, with Victoria, Australia, withdrawing from the 2026 Games due to escalating costs. Glasgow stepped in as an alternative host but with a significantly reduced program, dropping key sports such as boxing, wrestling, hockey, cricket, badminton, and shooting—disciplines where India traditionally excels.

India submitted its Expression of Interest (EOI) before the March 31 deadline, supported by a letter from the Gujarat government and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). IOA President P.T. Usha has expressed optimism that the CGF will evaluate India’s proposal favorably. The CGF’s selection process is ongoing, with further announcements expected in due course.

Mandaviya also highlighted ongoing consultations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and indicated that India is prepared to make a formal presentation for the 2036 Olympics bid once the new IOC President takes office in June.

Beyond the bid, the Sports Ministry is launching youth-driven initiatives aimed at fostering national integration and civic engagement, reflecting a holistic approach to nation-building alongside sporting ambitions.
