The Patels, who have become synonymous with the hotel and motel industry in the US over the past three decades, wield considerable influence. According to Doshi, they not only dominate the American hospitality landscape but also play a pivotal role in matters related to travel and tourism. Despite federal regulations, they have managed to thrive and enrich themselves.

Born in Vadia, Saurashtra, and raised in Kolkata, Doshi, a former journalist with an ethnic Indian American publication, has meticulously chronicled the story of Patels in America’s motel industry. His book is based on interviews with scores of Patels and industry insiders. Interestingly, a movie adaptation of his book is currently in the works.

The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), founded in 1989, represents over 36,000 properties, employs more than 1.1 million workers, contributes over 1.5% to the US GDP, and collectively spends over USD 50 billion annually. The Patels, with properties worth USD 1 trillion, epitomize the American immigrant success story within the American hotel industry.
