The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) executive committee has appointed the new Head Coach of the Indian Football Team this Friday, on August 1st. Khalid Jamil, who is a former Indian Player and is famous for taking the unheralded Aizawl Football Club and guiding them to win the I-league Championship back in 2017.
With his selection at the prestigious position, Jamil has become the first Indian to occupy the post in 13 years. It was reported that the 48-year-old Jamil, who is currently in charge of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, was selected by the committee out of a pool consisting of 3 men who were all eyeing for the post.
The Indian Football Team took to their social media to announce the appointment of Jamil as the new Head Coach. They wrote, “The AIFF Executive Committee, in the presence of the Technical Committee, has approved the appointment of Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the Senior India Men’s National Team.”
The Technical Committee that was influential in appointing Jamil as the Head Coach of the national side was led by legendary striker IM Vijayan. The committee had helped the AIFF Executive Committee by shortlisting the three candidates and leaving it to them for the final decision. The other two contenders to become India’s Head Coach were former Indian Head Coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, who previously managed the Slovakia national team.
Jamil will be taking over the reins from Spaniard Manolo Marquez. Marquez had parted ways with the AIFF last month after the recent struggles of the senior men’s team. With Jamil taking the reins an Indian will finally be coaching the national side after a long wait of 13 years. Savio Medeira was the last Indian born to hold the position back in 2012.
