At least 13 people were killed and 10 others injured in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra on Monday as relentless monsoon showers battered Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad, Nashik and the Konkan region, disrupting transport, damaging homes and forcing authorities to intensify rescue and relief operations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Red Alerts for several districts, warning of continued heavy rainfall, strong winds and the possibility of cloudbursts in vulnerable areas.
According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, nearly 100 houses have been damaged due to flooding, landslides and structural collapses, while hundreds of residents have been shifted to safer locations. Several fatalities were reported after wall collapses, falling trees and the collapse of a dilapidated building in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area, highlighting the dangers posed by the intense downpour.
The heavy rainfall has severely disrupted daily life. Roads across Mumbai and neighbouring districts remained waterlogged, suburban rail services witnessed delays, and traffic movement was affected following landslides, including one on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway link road. As a precaution, schools and colleges in Mumbai and Pune remained closed, while civic authorities urged residents to avoid non-essential travel.
Pune district witnessed multiple landslides after recording exceptionally high rainfall, while Lonavala registered one of its wettest spells in over a decade. Emergency teams have been deployed across affected districts as overflowing rivers and saturated hillsides continue to pose risks.
The state government has placed disaster response agencies on high alert and appealed to citizens to remain indoors unless necessary. Weather officials have warned that heavy rainfall is likely to persist over the next 24 to 48 hours, with authorities continuing to monitor vulnerable areas and carry out evacuation and rescue operations.
