Human Services Commissioner Stephen Cha on Tuesday welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship, describing the ruling as a reaffirmation of a long-standing constitutional principle that defines American citizenship.

In a statement released following the Court’s decision, Cha said the ruling strengthens the nation’s commitment to the Constitution and provides legal certainty for generations of Americans.

“As America celebrates 250 years of independence, this decision reaffirms a constitutional principle that has defined who is a U.S. citizen for generations. Upholding the Constitution strengthens our nation, provides certainty under the law, and is something every person proud to call themselves an American can celebrate.”

The statement links the Court’s decision with the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, emphasizing the enduring significance of constitutional protections and the role of birthright citizenship in shaping the country’s national identity.
