Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday handed over a Made-in-India Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) named PS LESPWAR to the Seychelles Coast Guard, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s defence and maritime security partnership with the island nation. The transfer took place during Modi’s three-day official visit to Seychelles and highlighted India’s growing role as a trusted security partner in the Indian Ocean region.
The vessel is expected to enhance Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol capabilities, helping the country improve its ability to monitor and secure its surrounding waters. The handover reflects India’s commitment to supporting the security priorities of Seychelles through capacity-building initiatives and defence cooperation.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base. Along with the patrol vessel, India also provided additional support equipment, including ambulances, utility vehicles and other assets aimed at strengthening Seychelles’ security and development needs.
The latest move comes as part of India’s broader vision of strengthening partnerships in the Indian Ocean region under its MAHASAGAR approach, which focuses on mutual security, growth and cooperation among regional countries. India and Seychelles share longstanding defence ties, with New Delhi previously assisting the island nation through maritime assets, training and other forms of support.
The handover also assumes significance amid increasing focus on maritime security, illegal activities at sea and the need for stronger regional cooperation.
During his visit, Modi also participated in events marking Seychelles’ national celebrations and held discussions with the country’s leadership on expanding bilateral cooperation. The two nations have emphasized the importance of a secure and stable Indian Ocean as a shared responsibility.
The delivery of PS LESPWAR underlines India’s expanding defence manufacturing capabilities and its effort to deepen strategic partnerships through indigenous technology and collaborative security initiatives.
