Air India is reviewing the possibility of restoring some international flight operations after easing tensions in the Gulf region improved airspace availability and falling jet fuel prices reduced pressure on airline costs, officials said. The move comes weeks after the airline cut services on select overseas routes due to geopolitical disruptions and rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline is assessing its international network and may bring back some flights that were temporarily reduced. The decision will depend on operational feasibility, passenger demand and continued stability in the region.
The Tata Group-owned airline had earlier announced temporary adjustments to its international schedule between June and August, citing airspace restrictions in parts of the Middle East and record-high fuel costs. The reductions were aimed at maintaining network stability and avoiding last-minute disruptions for passengers. Despite the cuts, Air India continued operating more than 1,200 international flights every month across five continents.
The Gulf region plays a crucial role in global aviation as many international routes between India, Europe and North America pass through its airspace. Restrictions and uncertainty in the region had forced airlines to alter flight paths, increasing travel times and fuel consumption.
A decline in global fuel prices has now improved the economics of operating long-haul flights. Aviation fuel is among the biggest expenses for airlines, and lower costs could provide relief to carriers that faced higher operating expenses during the period of disruption.
Air India’s possible restoration of flights could benefit passengers, especially those travelling to destinations in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The airline had earlier reduced capacity on some international routes after assessing commercial viability amid increased costs and operational challenges.
The development comes as Air India continues its transformation under the Tata Group, focusing on strengthening its global network and improving operational efficiency.
