External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah here on Friday, in a move that signals renewed efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the two neighbours. The meeting took place, underscoring New Delhi’s wider push to keep key regional relationships on track amid global tensions.

Hamidullah, who took charge as Bangladesh’s top diplomat in India in May last year, described the interaction as a “courtesy call” and said his country is ready to work with India “in shared interests and for shared benefits.” In a social‑media post, he said Bangladesh wants to walk and work with India together. Jaishankar, too, posted that their conversation focused on “advancing our bilateral ties,” without going into specific details.

Diplomatic sources said the talks were mainly exploratory, covering broad areas such as trade, connectivity, and people‑to‑people contact. The meeting comes at a time when Bangladeshi politics has undergone a shift after the new government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office, and both sides want to keep relations stable and functional.

Analysts say that while there are still some points of friction, including border issues and trade imbalances, the latest round of contact shows that both countries are working to avoid a major setback.
