Indian Railways will introduce the country’s inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata later this month, boosting overnight connectivity between Northeast and Eastern India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the train from Malda, West Bengal, on January 17, marking a milestone in premium long-distance travel.
The train enforces strict egalitarian policies with no VIP or emergency quotas allowed, barring even senior railway officials from using passes. Only confirmed tickets will be issued, eliminating Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) to minimize waiting lists and ensure full-berth comfort for all passengers.
Passengers can expect upgraded amenities, including modern bedrolls with superior blankets, local cuisine, and uniformed staff showcasing Indian culture through design and services. Transparent ticketing and uniform rules across classes promise a consistent experience.
Comprising 11 coaches of 3 AC (611 berths), four 2 AC (188 berths), and one 1 AC (24 berths)—the train totals 823 berths. Key features include ergonomic berths with enhanced cushioning, automatic doors and vestibules, superior suspension for noise reduction, Kavach anti-collision system, emergency talk-back, and advanced disinfection for sanitation.
