Starbucks has announced the appointment of Anand Varadarajan as executive vice president and chief technology officer, effective January 19. Varadarajan will join the company’s Executive Leadership Team and lead the Starbucks Technology organization, reporting directly to the chief executive officer.
Varadarajan brings nearly two decades of experience from Amazon, where he spent close to 19 years developing customer-focused technology and helping teams operate with speed and agility. Most recently, he oversaw technology and supply chain operations for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores business. Earlier in his career, he held software engineering roles at Oracle and worked with several startups.
In his new role, Varadarajan will be responsible for advancing Starbucks’ technology strategy, with a focus on building reliable and secure systems, driving operational excellence, and scaling solutions that keep customers at the center of the experience. Company leadership highlighted not only his technical expertise but also his commitment to supporting and developing the teams that design and maintain critical technology platforms.
Varadarajan holds an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Washington.
Starbucks leadership expressed confidence that Varadarajan’s experience and leadership will help accelerate ongoing initiatives and further strengthen the company’s ability to deliver high-quality experiences for both partners and customers.
