From the bustling streets of Punjab to the shimmering lights of international fame, Diljit Dosanjh’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Known for his magnetic stage presence and heartfelt performances, the singer-actor has once again broken barriers—this time with a nomination at the prestigious 2025 International Emmy Awards.

On September 25, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced its nominations, and among the world’s finest talents, Diljit’s name stood tall. He has been nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his transformative role in Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila. This marks a watershed moment not only in his career but also for Indian representation on the global stage.

In Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit brought to life the story of Punjab’s legendary folk singer, who was often dubbed the “Elvis of Punjab.” Set in the 1980s, the film chronicles Chamkila’s meteoric rise in the music world with bold lyrics, electrifying performances, and an unapologetic voice of the people. The narrative takes a tragic turn with Chamkila’s assassination at the young age of 27, alongside his wife, Amarjot Kaur.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the biopic resonated with audiences globally. Its emotionally raw storytelling, live-recorded folk music, and Diljit’s hauntingly real performance made it a cultural milestone. The film didn’t just win hearts—it earned accolades. It also bagged a nomination in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category at the Emmys, making it a double celebration for the team and a defining moment for Indian cinema.

Diljit’s nomination places him alongside international heavyweights such as David Mitchell (Ludwig), Oriol Pla (Yo, Adicto), and Diego Vasquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude). That the Punjabi artist now competes on such a stage is a testament to his versatility, passion, and relentless pursuit of artistic excellence.

But Diljit’s rise hasn’t been without turbulence.

Earlier this year, he found himself at the center of controversy with the release of Sardaar Ji 3, which featured Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The film, released overseas on June 27, became a lightning rod for backlash following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, which reignited tensions between India and Pakistan. Critics targeted the film for its cross-border casting, with pressure mounting from film associations and social media alike. In response, the makers announced the decision not to release Sardaar Ji 3 in India.

During a concert in Kuala Lumpur, Diljit addressed the growing controversy with rare candor. With visible emotion and careful words, he clarified that Sardaar Ji 3 was shot in February—prior to the terror incident—and emphasized his deep respect for his homeland.

“There is a difference. My film was shot before the attack, and the match was played afterwards,” he told the crowd, referring to the India vs. Pakistan cricket match that reignited online debate. “We have always prayed that the terrorists should receive the strictest punishment… I would never go against my country,” he added, earning thunderous applause from the audience.

This moment of vulnerability showcased another side of Diljit: one that values silence over spectacle, but stands firm in integrity. “I have a lot of things to say, but I choose to stay silent,” he said, hinting at the emotional toll such scrutiny takes—even for someone so loved.

Despite the challenges, Diljit’s career shows no signs of slowing down. He is set to appear next in Border 2, sharing the screen with Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty—a film that promises a mix of patriotism and power-packed drama.

Whether it’s belting out hits on a global stage, acting in genre-defining films, or handling controversies with maturity, Diljit Dosanjh continues to redefine what it means to be an Indian artist in the 21st century. From stadium tours to streaming charts, and now to the International Emmys, Diljit’s journey reflects not just personal triumph but the expanding reach of Indian talent.

As the world tunes in for the 2025 International Emmy Awards, millions will be cheering not just for a nomination—but for the spirit of a performer who rose from the heartland of Punjab to captivate the world.
