This Sunday, on August 31st, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Indian leader has stated that he is “committed” to re-establish the relationship between India and China and take the relations forward on the back of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.

PM Modi was in a meeting with President Jinping on the sidelines of the ongoing two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in Tianjin, China. Mr. Modi stated that after the tensions on the border between the two nations finally there is some peace and stability between them. PM Modi also highlighted the meeting the two leaders had in Russia last year in October, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit which led them in a positive direction.

“Last year, we had a very meaningful discussion in Kazan, which gave a positive direction to our relations. After the disengagement on the border, an atmosphere of peace and stability has been created,” he said in his remarks.

“The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to our cooperation. This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity,” he added.

China’s President Jinping also spoke on securing good relations between the two nations. He highlighted that India and China are the two most populous countries and it is very important that they become good neighbours rising above the border tensions.

“The world is going towards transformation. China and India are two of the most civilizational countries. We are the world’s two most populous countries and part of the Global South… It is vital to be friends, a good neighbour, and the Dragon and the Elephant to come together,” he said.
