There has been a huge controversy as a huge political row has been fired up after there were reports that several civic bodies in India have ordered the meat shops and slaughterhouses to remain closed on 15th August on the occasion of Independence Day this year. Many politicians from several different parties have refuted the ban and have called it a crackdown on people’s food habits. They have called it a violation of the freedom that the country celebrates its Independence Day for.
Amidst the whole list of MPs is Asaduddin Owaisi, the MP from Hyderabad and AIMIM chief. He has blasted the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for giving orders to keep the slaughterhouses and meat shops closed on August 15th and 16th — Independence Day and Janmasthami.
Owaisi took to his social media account to express his frustrations on the matter and stated that the moment is completely ‘callous and unconstitutional’. He highlighted that being independent means that people have their right to eat whatever they want.
“Many municipal corporations across India seem to have ordered that slaughterhouses and meat shops should be closed on 15th August. Unfortunately, @GHMCOnline has also made a similar order. This is callous and unconstitutional,” said Owaisi.
“What we eat on Independence Day is our right, our freedom. They cannot tell us whether to eat. In our house, even during Navratri, our prasad has prawns and fish because this is our tradition. This is our Hindutva. Why are you entering our homes? The municipal corporation should focus on issues such as potholes on roads,” said Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray over a similar ban in Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation.
On the other hand, spokesperson for the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Arun Sawant has stated that the BJP-Sena-NCP government in Maharashtra has made no approval on the meat ban. “The Opposition is levelling false allegations against the state government and trying to malign it,” he said.
