India’s match saving performance at Old Trafford in 4th Test of the series has kept them alive in the series. Although they can’t win the series now, they can draw the series in the fifth match at the Oval. There were a lot of talking points throughout the match and one of the major topics of discussion was the usage of Washington Sundar as a bowler. When Sundar was asked about the same, his clever reply left everyone in splits.

India’s Captain Shubman Gill was heavily criticised by former players and experts for not utilising Sundar’s offspin and introducing him pretty late in the attack. In an interview to Sky Sports after the cricket match, Sundar was asked, “Did your captain forget that you can bowl in the first innings?”

However, Sundar knew any reply he gives would become a headline and would be moulded into a controversy. In a very clever way Sundar dodged the bullet and said, “I’m not giving any headlines this time!” His reply sparked a huge laugh from former England cricketers Stuart Broad and Nasser Hussain.

One of the greatest bowlers from England, Broad had an advice for Washington stating that he should work more on giving right hints to his captain so that he gets the bowl early. Broad advised, “You need to work on your tips and hints out there. ‘I’m loose, I’m ready to go.” However, Sundar was ready to reply and stated, “Most of the time, I am around the square, so I’m sure I cross him every now and then. But yeah, whatever the team needs.”

The series as of now lies in England’s favour with the home side leading 2-1. Both teams will now travel to London for the final match of what has been one of the greatest series ever between India and England. The last match will be played at the Oval starting on 31st July and will decide the fate of the series.
