Pakistan’s month-long stay as the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is about to see its end. Pakistan is looking to make use of it before its end as they are organising an open debate on the unresolved issues around the whole world. It is quite obvious that the neighbouring country is trying to have this debate to bring up the Kashmir issue in front of the nations.

Pakistan with this open debate is looking to bring up some resolutions on the ongoing disputes around the world and urge member-states to use mechanisms available for pacific settlement of these disputes. However, it is quite certain that they are majorly looking at this debate as an opportunity to bring up the Kashmir issue.

Even though they will bring up the issue it is highly unlikely that they will bring up the Jammu and Kashmir topic directly themselves as they could get vetoed by the members of the UNSC. Any resolution in the UNSC needs around 9 votes to pass through including the votes from the 5 permanent members of the Security Council – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar is all set to travel to New York to chair the event which will take place on July 22nd. It is highly likely that the event will be briefed by the Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

As per report of the Security Council, Pakistan is aiming to adopt the resolution with full use of all Chapter VI mechanisms which are present to ensure peaceful resolutions between nations. They will be seeking Article 33 which states that if any dispute between two parties is endangering international peace and security, they should seek a solution by mediation and arbitration.
