Cooley LLP has strengthened its presence in Asia with the addition of capital markets partner Shashwat Tewary to its Singapore office, a move that comes as the firm intensifies its focus on Indian initial public offerings (IPOs) and capital markets activity across Southeast Asia. Tewary, who joined from Sidley Austin, brings deep experience advising clients on IPOs, equity offerings, and complex capital markets transactions in India and the region.

Tewary’s arrival marks a strategic expansion for Cooley, which has been steadily building its Asia footprint since launching in Singapore in 2020. The firm, recognized as a global leader in capital markets, has advised on 158 deals totaling over $41 billion in 2024 alone, and is ranked #1 for issuer-side IPOs and life sciences IPOs. Cooley’s Asia practice, with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore, is now one of the largest international capital markets teams in the region.

Tewary’s track record includes advising on landmark Indian transactions such as the country’s first REIT IPO, the first infrastructure investment trust IPO, and numerous sponsor- and private equity-led listings, particularly in the technology and healthcare sectors. His expertise is expected to bolster Cooley’s ability to serve clients seeking to tap into India’s fast-growing capital markets, which have seen a surge in IPO activity amid robust investor demand.

“We are delighted to welcome Shashwat to Cooley,” said Sonya Erickson, partner and global chair of the firm’s business department. “His experience strengthens our capabilities in the expanding Indian capital markets arena and continues our growth in Singapore and Southeast Asia, as we support our global client base and innovation in those geographies”.

Tewary expressed enthusiasm about joining Cooley’s “forward-thinking capital markets team,” noting the dynamic opportunities in Asia’s evolving markets. The hire underscores Cooley’s commitment to supporting innovative companies and investment banks navigating complex cross-border deals, particularly as Indian IPOs attract increasing international interest.

With nearly 1,400 lawyers across 19 offices worldwide, Cooley’s latest move positions it to capitalize on the region’s momentum and further establish itself as a go-to adviser for high-profile capital markets transactions in Asia.
