On 18th June, Wednesday, the Indian Navy announced that they are all set to commission the INS Arnala. The INS Arnala will be the country’s first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC).

The Spokesperson of the Indian Navy at Naval Headquarters and the Directorate of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, in a post on its official social media handle, talked about how the INS Arnala went on from being just a blueprint to an Anti-submarine Warship.

“India’s first indigenously designed and built Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, is all set to be commissioned today, #18Jun 25. We bring to you the Journey of Arnala From Blueprint … to A Warship,” the Navy wrote in their social media post.

The INS Arnala, which was built and indigenously designed by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, is the first of the eight ASW SWCs (Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft). The ship was delivered to the Indian Navy on May 8th 2025 at M/s L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli. The ship was built keeping in mind the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of GRSE with M/s L&T Shipyard.

“Arnala’s delivery is yet another milestone in the Indian Navy’s quest for indigenous shipbuilding and upholding the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ with over 80 per cent indigenous content,” the release said.

INS Arnala is a 77 meter long warship which is the largest Indian Naval warship which is supported by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet combination. The ship specialises in underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations and Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO).
