Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi starrer, Bhool Chuk Maaf finally released on the big screen on Friday, 23rd May. Despite the setbacks regarding the release of the film which kept getting postponed, the film saw a decent opening collection on its first day in the theatres. The film collected 7.2 crores on its first day of release.
The film matched the opening of one of Rajkummar Rao’s previous releases Mr. and Mrs. Mahi but hasn’t overtaken his highest opening venture Stree 2 which recorded 51 crores at the box office on the opening day. The movie outperformed some of Rao’s other releases such as Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video (Rs 5.5 crore) and Srikanth (Rs 2.25 crore).
The movie had an overall 19.36% occupancy across the country on its opening day. The morning shows began with 9.4% occupancy, but the occupancy increased through the day, peaking at 31.27% in the evening. The movie performed the best in the National Capital Region (Delhi NCR) (21.5%), followed by Bengaluru (25%), Mumbai (19.5%) and Pune (17.75%).
Bollywood has recently been going through a struggle performing on the big screens. The movies are earning pretty less than what they usually would. This could be seen in the recent movies as well with Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh despite having Akshay Kumar as the lead earned Rs 7.75 crore on Day 1. Sunny Deol’s Jaat collected Rs 9.5 crore on the opening day, John Abraham’s The Diplomat collected around Rs 4 crore and Shahid Kapoor’s Deva earned Rs 5.5 crore.
Bhool Chuk Maaf is all set to be released on the OTT platforms in a couple of weeks which might also be the reason that the film has not performed sensationally at the box office. The film is directed by Karan Sharama and is produced by Maddock Films. It also stars veteran actors such as Seema Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra, Zakir Hussain and Raghubir Yadav.
