Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has made history as the only Indian voice on the prestigious Competition Jury at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, underscoring the country’s growing influence on global cinema. Kapadia, acclaimed for her bold storytelling and innovative cinematic style, joins an elite panel that will decide the winners of the festival’s top honors, including the coveted Palme d’Or.
This year, India’s presence at Cannes is more prominent than ever, with a record number of films, debuts, and industry events showcasing the nation’s cinematic talent. Alongside Kapadia’s jury appointment, several Indian films are set to premiere across various sections of the festival, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary Indian cinema.
Kapadia, whose previous work A Night of Knowing Nothing won the Oeil d’Or at Cannes in 2021, brings a unique perspective to the jury. Her inclusion is seen as a recognition of India’s evolving film landscape and its ability to produce world-class auteurs. “It’s a huge honour to represent India and be a part of such a distinguished panel,” Kapadia said in a statement ahead of the festival.
In addition to Kapadia’s historic role, Cannes 2025 features Indian films in key categories, including feature debuts and documentaries, as well as special screenings. Notably, several Indian filmmakers and actors are scheduled to participate in panel discussions and networking events, further cementing India’s status as a creative powerhouse.
Industry experts view this year’s festival as a turning point for Indian cinema’s global outreach. “The strong Indian contingent at Cannes 2025 is not just about numbers, but about the quality and range of stories being told,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
