India and the UK have formalized a significant agreement to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities by developing electric propulsion systems for Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). Signed in Portsmouth, this Statement of Intent (SoI) marks a pivotal step in India’s naval modernization efforts, aiming to produce four LPDs at Indian shipyards.

LPDs are essential for amphibious warfare, enabling the transport of troops and equipment during humanitarian missions and disaster relief operations. The collaboration with the UK not only emphasizes indigenous technology development but also aims to replace older propulsion systems currently used in the navy’s fleet. The integration of advanced electric propulsion will enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The agreement comes after years of delays in India’s amphibious vessel acquisition project, initially proposed over a decade ago. With the UK’s expertise, particularly in electric propulsion technology, India aims to bolster its maritime capabilities amid rising regional tensions. This partnership reflects a growing strategic relationship between the two nations, underscoring their commitment to maintaining security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The SoI is expected to facilitate co-design and co-production of cutting-edge naval technology, ensuring that India’s future naval vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art systems. As both countries continue to strengthen their defense ties, this initiative is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing India’s maritime power and operational readiness.
