Australia has launched a new visa ballot process for its Work and Holiday program, specifically targeting young Indian citizens. Starting September 16, 2024, Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 will be eligible to apply for the Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa, allowing them to work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. This initiative is part of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), which aims to strengthen cultural and educational ties between the two nations.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs has announced that the new pre-application process will utilize a lottery system to manage the high demand for visas from India, China, and Vietnam. Each year, Australia will allocate 1,000 visas for Indian applicants. To participate in the ballot, candidates must register online and pay a fee of AUD 25. Those selected will then be able to submit their visa applications.
In addition to age requirements, applicants must possess a valid Indian passport and demonstrate completion of at least two years of post-secondary education. Interestingly, Indian applicants are exempt from providing proof of government support, a requirement for applicants from other countries.
Chaman Preet, a migration expert based in Melbourne, emphasized that this amendment presents significant opportunities for young Indians looking to explore Australia while gaining international work experience. The introduction of this visa program is expected to enhance tourism, and workforce needs in Australia.
The Work and Holiday visa allows holders to undertake short-term work while traveling, making it distinct from traditional tourist visas. This initiative not only promotes tourism but also aims to deepen strategic relations between Australia and India by fostering youth engagement.
With this new ballot system, Australia is taking steps toward a more transparent application process while ensuring that opportunities are fairly distributed among eligible candidates. As details about the ballot opening dates are finalized, prospective applicants are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
