As part of the celebration of India’s 78th Independence day in Long Island, an India Day Parade is being organized on August 25th, 2024. The 13th India Day Parade will be celebrating India’s freedom from British rule with several colorful floats and over fifty Marching groups and music bands. IDP 2024 will feature traditional dances, musical performances, and a variety of cultural displays, presenting a vibrant showcase of India’s rich cultural ethnicity.

Recently, it has been announced that Dr. Urmilesh Arya, Pediatrician and Fellow of the American College of Pediatrics, who retired as medical director at Queens Bridge Family Health Center will be the Grand Marshal of the IDP in Long Island.

Dr. Arya’s involvement extends beyond medicine into the Indian Community. She has been serving as a trustee of Hindu Community Center in Flushing, New York and also served as a trustee of Association of Physicians in America, Long Island Queens. Her immense desire to serve the community translated into getting elected as President of AIA, Association of Indians in America (New York Chapter) in 2003-2004.

The hallmark of this Association’s activities was the Deepavali celebration on the first Sunday of October at South Street Seaport in New York City. Dr. Arya during her presidency celebrated Diwali at the City Hall with Council Members, at Gracy Mansion in the NYC with Mayer Bloomberg and at White House, Washington DC with Chief Advisor of the President Mr. Carl Rove.

Besides, she actively promotes education for children and Indian culture through her socially responsible and philanthropic activities. In June 2023, she received Honor award by Town of Hempstead Long Island NY, for Community Services.
