The United Nations has lauded India for lifting approximately 80 crore (800 million) people out of poverty, attributing this remarkable achievement primarily to the widespread use of smartphones. This acknowledgment came during a recent address by UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome.
Francis emphasized that the digital revolution in India has transformed the lives of millions, enabling access to essential services and information that were previously out of reach for many. He highlighted that the integration of technology into daily life has played a pivotal role in economic upliftment, particularly in rural areas where traditional means of income generation were limited.
The past five to six years have seen a significant increase in smartphone penetration across India. This surge has facilitated access to various digital platforms, allowing individuals to engage in e-commerce, online education, and digital banking. These advancements have not only improved livelihoods but have also empowered people by providing them with the tools necessary to enhance their skills and access better opportunities.
The UNGA President noted that this digital transformation aligns with global efforts to eradicate poverty and improve living standards. By leveraging technology, India has set a precedent for other developing nations, showcasing how digital inclusion can lead to substantial socio-economic progress.
