Ruchira Kamboj retires – A journey of gracing the cover of Competition Success Review to India’s first woman permanent rep at UN

Ruchira Kamboj, after an illustrious career spanning over 35 years, retired as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Kamboj, who was the All India women’s topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch and the topper of the 1987 Foreign Service batch, formally assumed the position of Permanent Representative/Ambassador of India to New York in August 2022.

She became the first woman diplomat to hold the prestigious position of Ambassador of India at the UN. During her tenure, Kamboj actively highlighted India’s achievements at the UN. Her retirement announcement was met with overwhelming responses from people across various walks of life, including former ambassadors and common citizens.

Ruchira was featured on the cover photo of the Competition Success Review, in August 1987, as the all-India women’s topper in Civil Services.

Ruchira bid goodbye on social media, saying “Thank you, Bharat, for the extraordinary years and unforgettable experiences,” the 60-year-old senior diplomat signed off with a heartfelt message on her X handle.
