IOCUSA expressed its solidarity with the struggles of India’s farmers and their demand for the Minimum Price Guarantee for 23 crops. “Agriculture is the backbone of the nation that safeguards the livelihoods of millions of lives while promoting food security for India. Unfortunately, the BJP government fails to see its contribution from the social justice and equity perspective,” said George Abraham, Vice-Chairman of the IOCUSA.

IOC USA issued a press release, stating that IOCUSA strongly supports the farmer’s right to protest and let their voices be heard. “The recent death of Shubhkaran Singh, a 21-year-old farmer, shows the high-handed tactics the police are employing to suppress the fundamental rights of freedom of expression. We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones,” mentioned IOC USA in the release.

“We call upon the Modi administration to pass laws that guarantee minimum prices for their crops while requesting the law enforcement authorities to show restraint and respect laws that govern dissent and freedom of expression,” stated IOC USA, further in the release.

The 2024 Indian farmers’ protest is an ongoing protest that started on February 13th to demand the government’s guarantee on assured floor prices or Minimum Support Price for crop production in a repeat of the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest.

Meanwhile, another protesting farmer has died at the Khanauri border,  during the ongoing protest in the call for Delhi Chalo. The 62-year-old farmer, Darshan Singh from Amargarh village in Bhatinda district, had been camping at the Khanauri border since Feb 13th.
