The state board of Education for the District of Columbia recently announced a decision to include Sikhism in the new social studies curriculum of schools. This development makes Washington, D.C. to be one of the 17 states that have incorporated truthful information about Sikhs into their social studies standards for public schools.
This newly adopted social studies standard will be implemented in local schools starting from the 2024-2025 academic year.
This momentous occasion is part of the Sikh Coalition’s multi-year campaign, which aims to ensure that accurate information on Sikhism is available and taught to public school students in the whole of the US. As per an estimate, approximately 49,800 students in the state can now have access to genuine information about the Sikh community in schools.
It is a significant milestone in the Sikh Coalition’s multi-year efforts and campaign to increase awareness of Sikhism for the new generations in the US. These new standards will provide students of Washington DC with authentic information while learning about Sikhism and generate a cohesive experience for Sikh Americans in the classrooms.
