India’s IIT creates history: in a first, Tanzania to have an IIT campus outside India

IIT-Madras signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up its first campus outside India at Zanzibar, a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a first-of-its-kind collaboration, announced to set up the first IIT campus outside India in Tanzania’s Zanzibar, expected to launch academic programs in October.

This Indian Institute of Technology campus in Zanzibar will be developed as a world-class higher education and research institution with an aim to develop competencies for emerging global scenarios. This campus will serve as an example to the world of the aspirational qualities of Indian higher education and innovation, enhancing India’s reputation globally.

S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India who is currently visiting Tanzania described the move as a “historic step” reflecting India’s commitment to the Global South. This MoU was inked in the presence of Jaishankar and Zanzibar’s President Hussein Ali Mwinyi between India’s education ministry, IIT Madras and Zanzibar’s ministry of education and vocational training.

This unique partnership will bring the educational expertise of the world-famous IIT Madras to an emerging destination in Africa. The academic programs, curricula, student selection aspects, and teaching details will be performed by IIT Madras, while the capital and operating expenditures will be borne by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania. The passing graduates from this campus will be awarded degrees by the prestigious IIT Madras.
