Mary Kom, a great sporting legend and India’s first-ever women boxing Olympic medallist has been honored with the Global Indian Icon of the Year award at the annual UK-India Awards in Windsor, Berkshire. Another noted Indian personality and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who directed the Oscar-nominated ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’ also received a Lifetime Achievement award, for his contribution to the field of cinema across both nations. India Global Forum (IGF) organized the awards as part of UK-India Week. The Nehru Centre in London, the cultural wing of the Indian High Commission, was presented with the prestigious UK-India Award for significant contribution to the relations of UK-India.

A jury of prominent industry experts selected the awardees, and it marked the penultimate event of the six-day-long UK-India Week. The high point of the celebration included a special reception hosted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street where he committed to work towards a “truly ambitious” free trade agreement (FTA) with India.

The awards, now in their 5th year, play an important role in recognizing the outstanding contributions of leaders in business, professional services, government, culture, and social impact, for their remarkable feats in strengthening bilateral ties. These awards are a symbol of celebration, for the power of collaboration and the limitless potential that lies within the UK-India partnership.
