The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) started an excavation last year in Bahaj village of Deeg district, Rajasthan on January 10th 2024. Through the excavation the ASI had found out several new findings and have unearthed evidence that point towards a civilisation that dates back to 4,500 years.

The ASI has discovered a 23-metre-deep paleo-channel in Bahaj. The archaeologists are stating that the ancient channel can be linked to the mythical Saraswati River, which is mentioned in the Rig Veda. The survey has also revealed that the findings also give evidence of five different periods.

According to them, the evidence includes evidence from the Harappan post-period, the Mahabharata period, the Mauryan period, the Kushan period and the Gupta period. They have also stated that they think the Braj region for a long time has been a centre of religious, cultural, and historical heritage.

This excavation in Rajasthan’s Bahaj Village became the deepest excavation that was ever conducted in the state as it reached the depth of 23 meters while discovering the ancient channel. The paleo channel is potentially linked to the Rigveda’s mythical Saraswati River.

The head of the ASI site in Bahaj, Pawan Saraswat had confirmed the findings in an interview. He has also informed that the water system that was found at the site were likely of the early human settlements that connected the Saraswati valley with the Mathura and the other regions of Braj. Not only that, the ASI team has also revealed that the site had some layers from the Mahabharata period.

The team stated that the excavation discovered pottery and havan kunds that featured rectangular and circular paintings and remains of fire rituals dating back to the Mahabharata period. The officials confirmed that the pottery matches with the description of utensils and clothes dating back to that time.
