In the recent conflicts with Pakistan, what gave India the edge over their neighbouring country was their superiority in military prowess. The air defence systems of India stood out and were the only reason that India was able to intercept all the drone and missile attacks by Pakistan. Now, the reports suggest that there are ongoing talks between Russia and India of procurement of more S-400 air defence systems.

Denis Alipov, the Russian Ambassador to India, on Wednesday in an interview talked about the success of Operation Sindoor and India’s approach to the conflict. He also talked about how the S-400 system and jointly manufactured BrahMos missiles were crucial during the time of need for India and how well they performed.

“From what we know, India has clearly stated the goals and undertaken actions after having identified the targets and the terrorists. As far as we know, during the operation, the S-400 system was used and the BrahMos missiles were engaged. Judging by the reports available, the performance of these weapons was exemplary,” Mr. Alipov said in an interview.

There are certain reports that reveal that there are ongoing discussions between India and Russia as New Delhi seems heavily interested in securing more S-400 defence systems going forward. When asked about the same, Mr. Alipov confirmed that there are discussions happening rather continuously. He said that it might be too early to talk about what these ongoing talks might lead up to.

Mr. Alipov stated, “Our discussion, on this particular topic, as on many others, is ongoing. It is a continuous one, but it would be incorrect for me and also premature to speak about the results of it at the moment.”

Both Russia and India have been long-term allies and have had a healthy cooperation in the field of military defence. Russia has supplied India with S-400 air defence systems, MiG-29, Kamov helicopters and INS Vikramaditya (formerly Admiral Gorshkov). They have also helped in the production of licensed T-90 tanks, Su-30 MKI, Ak-203 rifles and BrahMos missiles in India.
