It seems that there is good news for Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Deka as his term as the Chief is being extended for another year. This is the second time that Mr. Deka’s term has been extended. In an order issued by the Announcements Committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday it was mentioned that they have extended Mr. Deka’s term till June 2026 or until further notice.
Tuesday’s order from the Announcements Committee of the Cabinet said, “The extension is “in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.”
It was stated that the rules allow the Centre Government to extend the chief’s term of services for the Intelligence Bureau (IB). These rules also apply for the extensions of the Chief of Research and Analysis Wing, the Cabinet Secretary, the Home Secretary and others. It has one conditions attached
Tapan Deka was appointed as the Chief of Intelligence Bureau in June 2022. His term was supposed to be for two years till June 2024 but his term was extended for another year till June 2025. Deka holds an expertise in anti-terror cases that originate from Pakistan and has been really significant in protecting national security and defence. It just has one condition attached that it has to be in public interest.
Deka is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the batch of 1988 from Himachal Pradesh cadre. He was appointed as the Chief of the Intelligence Bureau after serving around two decades as the head of operations wing. He was also in charge for the counter-operation against the horrific terrorist attack of 26/11 in Mumbai in 2008. He has also been the go-to man for the government in Jammu and Kashmir operations.
