India has officially submitted a bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s sporting ambitions. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on October 1, 2024, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to bring the prestigious event to India.
This bid is seen as a monumental opportunity for India, potentially driving economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment across the country. Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasized the importance of this endeavor, stating that feedback from athletes who participated in previous Olympics will be crucial for planning and preparation.
India faces stiff competition from several nations, including Mexico, Poland, Egypt and Turkey, all vying for hosting rights. The IOC’s Future Host Commission will evaluate bids before a decision is made following the IOC elections next year. Currently, over ten countries have expressed interest in hosting the Games.
If successful, India plans to advocate for the inclusion of indigenous sports such as yoga, kho-kho, kabaddi, and chess in the Olympic program. This aligns with India’s broader strategy to enhance its sports infrastructure and inspire future generations of athletes.
The last time India hosted a major international multi-sport event was during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. With Ahmedabad being considered a potential host city, India’s sports administrators are actively lobbying for this historic opportunity.
