Suhas Subramanyam, an Indian-American, has secured the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District seat. He won the intra-party election on Tuesday to pick the Democratic candidate to contest the November general election for the House of Representatives from a constituency held by it. The constituency includes some suburbs of Washington.
The 37-year-old was endorsed by Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton, who is retiring and had previously flipped the seat to the Democratic side in 2018. Subramanyam’s family hails from Bengaluru. In 2019, he was elected to the Virginia General Assembly, and the State Senate last year. As a State Senator, he bested 11 other candidates in a competitive contest.
His background includes serving as President Barack Obama’s technology advisor, where he worked on cybersecurity and modernizing government agencies. Additionally, he is a volunteer medic and firefighter. In the general election, he will face Republican Mike Clancy.
He is married to Miranda Peña Subramanyam, who volunteers in her free time at the Dulles South Food Pantry. They currently reside in Ashburn, Virginia with their 2 daughters.
