The Indo-American Association Houston (IAA) presents acclaimed Odissi artist and choreographer Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya’s The Draupadi Phenomenon on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at MATCH. The presentation is part of IAA’s programming in the Midtown Houston Cultural Arts and Entertainment District.
More than a retelling of the Mahabharata, The Draupadi Phenomenon reimagines Draupadi as a compelling contemporary voice. Born from fire and later publicly humiliated in a royal court, Draupadi refuses silence and demands accountability from those who fail to protect her.
Her story raises questions that remain urgent today: Who speaks for a woman? Who decides for her? And what is the cost when institutions and bystanders remain silent?
Conceived, written and choreographed by Bhattacharya, who also performs the title role, the 90-minute production blends the sculptural expressiveness of Odissi with the athletic, martial energy of Mayurbhanj Chhau. Ensemble choreography, recorded music and multimedia stagecraft transform the ancient epic into a visually immediate theatrical experience for audiences with or without prior knowledge of Indian classical dance or the Mahabharata.
The score includes contributions from internationally recognized musicians, including santoor artist Tarun Bhattacharya and Grammy Award-winning mohan veena virtuoso Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The ensemble brings together dancers trained in Odissi, Chhau and Bharatanatyam, including Houston-based artists.
“Draupadi’s story belongs to an ancient world, but the questions she asks are startlingly current,” said Sheetal Bedi, Executive Director of IAA Houston. “This is precisely the kind of work IAA wants Houston audiences to encounter—artistically ambitious, rooted in a specific tradition and capable of opening a conversation across cultures.”
About Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya
Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya is an Odissi dancer, choreographer and teacher whose career spans more than four decades. She has performed internationally and is known for narrative productions that bring classical movement into dialogue with contemporary social questions.
Through the Sanchita Dance Foundation and teaching programs in India, the United States and China, she has trained and mentored emerging dancers.
