Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming film Eetha, based on the life of legendary Lavani and Tamasha artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar, has become the centre of a controversy after demands emerged to change the film’s title. Vithabai’s family has urged the makers to rename the biopic using the folk artist’s original name, arguing that it would better honour her legacy.

The controversy surfaced shortly after the release of the film’s teaser, which received attention for Shraddha Kapoor’s transformation into the iconic Maharashtra folk performer. However, the title Eetha soon became a point of debate, with critics questioning why a film about Vithabai Narayangaonkar does not carry her widely recognised name.

The request has been made to director Laxman Utekar and production house Maddock Films, requesting that the title be changed to Vitha or Vithabai. The group argued that Vithabai was a nationally recognised artist whose contribution to Lavani and Tamasha deserves direct acknowledgement through the film’s title.

Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family has also supported the demand while clarifying that they are not against the film itself. Her grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar said the family welcomes the attempt to bring her story to a wider audience but believes the title should include her real name to preserve her identity and legacy.

The makers have not yet announced any decision regarding the requested title change. Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha aims to showcase the life of Vithabai, who is remembered as one of Maharashtra’s most influential Lavani and Tamasha performers. The film highlights her struggles, dedication to folk art and impact on traditional performance culture.

While the controversy has shifted focus from the film’s teaser and Shraddha Kapoor’s performance to the naming debate, the discussion has also brought renewed attention to Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s contribution to Indian folk arts.
